El fuego de Lag b’omer

Ama el mas enkontro grande era el fuego de Lag b’omer. Todos veniyan kon tavlas i kozas para el fuego tradisional, i ayudaron a montar en el sentro de la lumbre un espanta pasharos* alto kon manos a los dos kotes, kon facha i kaveyos. Lo yamimos Hitler o Haman el negro.
Ke alegriya i emosion era en kayendo enbasho kemada la statua simbolika de tavlas.
Si era l Lag b’omerr en diya de kolada, las mujeres no aziyan la kolada del espanto ke se van embataka las savanas blankas dela siniza del fuego ke bola kon el aiyre.
Un diya de Lag b’omer, antes de asender el fuego, paso de aya un kristyano vizino i disho ke la statua asemeja a un kruz i esto traye penserios ajenos.
Bueno, mas no izimos la statua. Mos abasto el fuego kon los bayles i la alegriya.
Kieremos bivir en pas kon todas las relijioneså i devemos anular obstakolos ke azen danyo.

The Lag b’omer bonfires

Between the houses in our neighborhood there was an empty field, large and relatively flat. It was a good place for the children and young people to hang out, where they played ball, chilikas*, hide-and-seek, jump rope and staged plays.
But the biggest crowd gathered on Lag b’omer**. Everyone came with boards and things to light the traditional bonfire, and they all helped build a tall scarecrow in the center of it, which had hands on both sides, a face and hair. We called it Hitler or Black Haman ***.
We were all overjoyed when the symbolic dummy fell into the ground, burned.
If Lag B'omer fell on washing day, the women were afraid that the ashes, scattered by the wind, would soil the sheets.
One day, before lighting the bonfire, a Christian neighbor passed by and said that the scarecrow resembled a cross, which gave the wrong impression.
From then on we stopped making it. The bonfire was enough to make us dance and bring us joy.
We want to live in peace with all religions and we must remove the obstacles that cause harm.

** Lag b’omer is a Jewish holiday celebrated on the 33rd day of the Omer count, which this year falls on May 4th and 5th. People gather on the eve of the holiday to light fires to celebrate the life of rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, a second-century sage who lived in the Galilee region, in northern Israel. He was a disciple of Rabbi Akiva. For some, the festival has mystical connotations.
*** He was the prime minister to the Persian King Ahasuerus and main villain in the Book of Esther. He plotted to annihilate all Jews in the empire but was hanged in the gallows.

Las hogueras de
Lag B'omer

Entre las casas de nuestro barrio había un campo vacío, grande y relativamente plano.
Era un buen lugar para que los niños y jóvenes se reunieran, donde jugaban a la pelota, chilikas*, al escondite, saltar a la cuerda y representaban obras de teatro.
Pero la mayor multitud se reunía en Lag b’omer**. Todos venían con tablas y otras cosas para encender la tradicional hoguera, y todos ayudaban a hacer un espantapájaros alto en el centro de ésta, con manos a ambos lados, cara y pelo. Lo llamábamos Hitler o Hamán Negro***.
Nos alegrábamos muchísimo cuando la figura caía al suelo, quemada.
Si Lag b'omer coincidía con el día del lavado de ropa, las mujeres temían que las sábanas blancas se ensuciaran con la ceniza, que esparcía el viento.
Un día, antes de encender la hoguera, un vecino cristiano pasó por allí y dijo que el espantapájaros semejaba una cruz, lo que daba la impresión equivocada.
Desde entonces dejamos de hacerlo. La hoguera bastó para hacernos bailar y llenarnos de alegría.
Queremos vivir en paz con todas las religiones y debemos eliminar los obstáculos que causan daño.

** Lag b'omer es una festividad judía que se celebra el día 33 del conteo del Omer, que este año corresponde al 4 y 5 de mayo.
